SOCIETY
November is recognized as vegan month and in light of this, here are some vegetarian options available when dining in Tequisquiapan. There are a variety of restaurants offering fresh and healthy traditional options. Tequis, for short, is a Pueblo Magico, known for its proximity to wine and cheese country and centuries-old Spanish colonial architecture.
Blu Coffee is more than its name implies. While serving an array of delicious coffee drinks served in large mugs and glasses, they also offer matchas, smoothies, shakes and Masala chai, and have specifically noted vegetarian options on the menu. Situated upstairs and across from Soriana, Blu Coffee is in a Cupula (round brick dome) style building, uniquely designed inside with recycled industrial retro furnishings and Edison-style light fixtures. There is spacious outdoor deck seating as well and it conveys a family-friendly vibe, offering games, a swing and children’s books.
The family-owned restaurant has been around for six years. Often one or more of the children will be working serving guests. For starters, they have the Super Plato Vegitariano for breakfast, which comes with grilled potatoes, eggs, cheese, tomatoes and cucumbers. One may opt for avocado toast too which comes with egg and cheese. The Happy Vegetarian sandwich is served with whole wheat bread, cheese, veggies, olive oil and Italian spices. Added to which, their frappes are vegan, mixed with oat milk. Open every day.

Amarena Café Y Vida Verde is a warm cozy cafe with verdant plants that are for sale, along with daily baked goods at the front counter. They have been open for two years and are situated off one of the narrow streets close to the central plaza. For breakfast, Amarena offers a healthy creamy chia pudding with natural yogurt, coconut milk, honey, seasonal fruit, granola, and peanut butter. Hummus is also on the menu, a vegetarian staple that is often difficult to find in smaller cities. Their Mediterranean flatbread sandwich comes with this homemade hummus, feta, salad, and honey mustard dressing for 130 Mxn. Open daily, except Mondays.

Laysu Café and Confectionary offers cakes, pastries and cappuccinos/espressos. For breakfast they offer relleno de queso panela omelet with julienne vegetables. They serve both a vegetarian bagel or baguette sandwich which comes with lettuce, tomato, Manchego cheese and avocado. The Huevo 3 Chiles plate is scrambled eggs, salsa, three chiles and beans. Ensalada Laysu has a variety of lettuces, apples, goat cheese, blueberries and nuts. French onion soup, garlic bread and cheese fondue with traditional herbs are appetizer options. Open daily with shorter hours Sunday and closed on Mondays.
Casa Suelem is nestled in the artisanal corridor of Tequis, with unique neighboring cafes and shops selling local textiles and souvenirs. The restaurant features excellent regional dishes with quality procured and prepared ingredients, their chef offering traditional recipes from namesake, Abuela Suelem. They open daily at 2pm, except for Mondays and Tuesdays.
Guests will enjoy a comfortable atmosphere with balcony seating and attentive service. While they specialize in curated meats and local cheeses, they have a couple vegetarian options, including a roasted cauliflower plate with eggplant cream and chimichurri de la casa. Their frijol negro tamale dish features mole and nopales and is one of Abuela Suelem’s recipes. Visitors often remark on and recommend the unique croquetas de esquites which come served with local cheese.
Latitud 20 Café is named for the latitudinal degree crossing the city (20 degrees, 31’N), is a cozy café with additional seating upstairs. The cafe sits off a narrow street near the central plaza. The owner hails from the state of Chihuahua, and she opened the cafe two years ago, offering breakfasts and brunches. Open every day except Wednesdays, mornings and lunch. Latitud 20 serves a few vegetarian options, including a fruit and yogurt bowl, cheese chilaquiles and a cheese relleno dish. Pan Frances relleno comes served with goat cheese, fruit compote and maple honey. One can opt for an avocado toast served with salad but leave off the bacon. They serve a variety of coffee drinks, juices, bubble teas, frappes, and fruit smoothies.
