A Single Heartbeat: The World Cup that United Tequisquiapan

Every four years, populations across the globe get ready to watch the World Cup. It's a time that comes with many different emotions, which everyone experiences differently. Some enjoy it alone and others with family; but this year Tequisquiapan, with a big screen in Plaza Manuel Hidalgo, offered another option: a place where a grandfather looking to relax, a worker on his way home, two schoolmates, or a family of 4 could come together. In this way, the town achieved something special: a meeting point to enjoy the World Cup as a community.
In a World Cup that is extremely expensive and of limited access, the Tequisquiapan World Cup was, without a doubt, inclusive and accessible. From the start, banners could be seen hanging, saying "Soccer Unites Us," "Let's Go Mexico," "One Single Heartbeat," and "In Tequis the World Cup is Lived in Community" — slogans that, nowadays, can only be realized through free events. In short, the town of Tequisquiapan offered an experience that took into account the needs of both the floating and the permanent population.
Beneath the temporary hill, not only was the World Cup broadcast, but the space was initially used for a regional marching band competition, functioning in a way as an initiation rite for this communal space.
For a few days, next to the goalposts there were also free foosball tables so the community could play without needing coins, an economic relief. One could simply come with family, with friends, or meet a stranger, and spend time enjoying foosball together as a community.
During the most crowded games, it was known that more people would need to be accommodated. The solution? Another screen and more chairs: a simple and efficient response that reflects the capabilities a town can develop when it keeps its population's expectations in mind.
In the match between Czechia and Mexico, the excitement could be felt in the fried flour chicharrones and heard in the trumpets. The collective excitement of a shared match was palpable, with neighbors enjoying the game side by side. It's in moments like this, when the population can enjoy its own infrastructure, that the message "We Beat as One" becomes reality. In the end, Mexico won 3-0, and all that could be heard were the town's fireworks and the plastic trumpets. Perhaps one could say that "a single heartbeat" could be heard.
During the match between England and Mexico, more people arrived assuming a seat would be waiting for them, and they were right. The increase in people had been accounted for, and once again, more chairs were set up. And when the seats filled up, even more were quickly installed, an effort to accommodate everyone. It's the same reason alcohol consumption was prohibited within the event and why there were workers to direct the flow of people. Thanks to that organization, one could see how a man in a wheelchair could easily come and go. Also at this game, snacks were given out to many people, adding more atmosphere to the event.
Indeed, the World Cup served more than one purpose, demonstrating efficiency, planning, and intention. The hill functioned as an "ECOS," or space of social cohesion, that simultaneously stimulated the local economy. It was a place with a healthy, wholesome festive atmosphere, where unity and family were valued. A place where collective memories were created, shared by locals and outsiders alike, that will never be forgotten. In short, Tequisquiapan managed, developed, and cultivated the community through the World Cup. This event serves as an example for governments of any size, and demonstrates that Tequisquiapan has the capacity to organize international-caliber events while strengthening the sense of community that characterizes it.
